Title: Random Acts of Management: A Dilbert Book Author: Scott Adams Stars: ***
There is a reason that Dilbert comic strips are funny. It’s because there is a great deal of truth to them. Let’s face it, being a manager is tough. All managers make mistakes. All managers at one point or another engage in activity that borders on insanity.
A big mistake some managers make is to think that the scenes are not about them (or their companies). Some managers are even offended by Dilbert. Those managers are taking themselves much too seriously, and odds are good they are producing Dilbert material with proficiency. Managers need to admit that they have engaged in Dilbert-like activity themselves, because if they’ve been a manager long enough they have!
The book is actually a good teaching tool. It points out managerial ignorance in a light, non-threatening way allowing managers to laugh at their own bouts of idiocy. Once managers realize what they have been doing wrong, they can work toward reducing such occurrences in the future.
