As the title suggests, the author doesn’t dwell on theory in this book.
Rather, the focus is on action. It starts out by identifying cripplers of
companies – No clear directives, lack of accountability, rationalizing
inferior performance, planning in lieu of action, and aversion to
risk/change. Most have witnessed the damage done by these 5 cripplers.
Bob then introduces the 5 attributes of highly profitable companies –
superior leadership, sales effectiveness, operational excellence, financial
management, and customer loyalty - a well boiled down list.
Part 3 of the book deals with executing. It expands on the concepts
introduced in the first two sections. The 3 part structure allows Bob to
repeatedly hammer home key concepts. The layout is also very conducive
to learning and, of course, action. Bob asks questions to help the reader
identify where his/her organization stands. Lists of actions complete each
chapter. The reader is also pointed to additional reference materials
available on his website.
The book is refreshingly honest and direct. Bob tells it like it is with no
sugar-coating. It’s common sense, but not common practice. Bob repeats
this mantra multiple times in his book. Leaders/Managers need to get
back to the basics. This book shows them the way. It’s a very good road
map for improvement. If the tips in this book are followed, extraordinary
results will follow.
