Title: Instant Turnaround: Getting People Excited About
Coming to Work and Working Hard
Author: Harry Paul and Ross Reck, PHD
Stars: ****

Focus on the People and the numbers take care of themselves. That’s the
moral of this story. According to the authors, “Management is all about tapping
in to the discretionary effort of employees… Studies show that employees
regulate the amount of effort they’ll put toward their jobs based, largely, on
how they are treated.” So, treat them right and positive results will follow.

The authors use a cast of characters to show how a team with dismal morale
and performance can be turned around using their “Destination Work”
formula. The idea is to make work a destination – a place where people enjoy
work so much they proudly display “Thank God It’s Monday” (TGIM) buttons. It
is no surprise that one of the authors also co-authored
Fish, the popular book
about the Seattle Fish company. The formula is similar.

It’s a quick and enjoyable read which reinforces time-honored truisms that
are regularly ignored. Hopefully the authors will win some converts with this
one.
