Title: Good Boss, Bad Boss: How to Be the Best and Learn from the Worst Author: Robert I. Sutton, PhD Stars: ****
There’s no sugar-coating in this one. Robert Sutton tells it like it is, detailing the devastation caused by the overabundance of poor bosses. He does not pander to managers, explaining how they can get from “good to great.” Rather, he exposes the inherent flaws in all managers and the common mistakes they make as a result. He then prescribes a path to improvement. Here’s a sample quote.
“The best bosses and worst bosses are similar in that both have deep flaws. They are different, however, in that the best have the wisdom and self- awareness to stem the damage caused by their frailties.”
All managers can benefit from this book. Hopefully those that read it will have the self-awareness and humility to acknowledge their flaws and limitations and take Sutton’s advice on how to improve.
This is not a book to be read once and set aside. Mark it up. Reference it again and again. It’s an excellent defense against your inner “Bosshole.”
